Unfortunately, many people ignore these simple tips and thus plaque starts to form on our teeth.

Why is gum care are important?

Plaque is a sticky film that bacteria in our mouth produce. You can easily remove plaque through proper brushing, but if you don’t, it will turn into tartar. The presence of plaque and tartar on our teeth results in gum inflammation (also called gingivitis).

Gingivitis is easy to detect and treat with correct brushing and flossing. However, if left unchecked, it can progress into mild or advanced periodontitis.

Here are some symptoms of serious gum problems:

  • Long-lasting bad breath
  • Red, swollen, and aching gums
  • Receding gums
  • Pain during chewing
  • Loose teeth or sensitivity

How to keep your gums healthy?

Fortunately, you can easily avoid gum diseases through proper brushing and flossing at least twice a day. You should also visit your dentist at least once every year to have your gums checked and cleaned.

Proper brushing

Brushing your teeth twice every day is the key to healthy oral hygiene. Here are some tips on how to brush properly:

  • Brush twice every day with a soft-bristle toothbrush.
  • Change your toothbrush after every three to four months (you can change sooner if the bristles start to wear away).
  • Maintain a 45-degree angle to your gums when brushing.
  • Practice short brush strokes.
  • Do not press hard on your teeth.
  • Brush the insides of your front teeth by moving the brush vertically and using short strokes.

Daily flossing habit:

Many people ignore regular flossing, but it is as crucial as brushing. Regular flossing effectively removes plaque and food particles hidden between your teeth and gums. Repeated accumulation of plaque and food leads to tartar, which is a hard buildup between your teeth that only a dentist can remove.

Fluoride toothpaste

It is also important to pay attention to the toothpaste that you use. There are so many brands of toothpaste available that falsely claim to whiten your teeth and rid them of plaque and gum problems. However, these can be easily avoided.

The most important thing to do is simply look for products that contains fluoride and have a medically approved seal on the packaging. These are effective and will protect best against gum disease and tartar.

Use mouthwash

Mouthwash does more than just freshening up your breath. On the shelf, you’ll find fluoride, antiseptic, and therapeutic mouthwashes, all of which combat different oral problems. You should ask your dentist to recommend the ideal mouthwash for your oral condition.

Quit smoking

Smoking is directly responsible for gum problems. Smoking weakens our immune system, impairing the body’s ability to fight gum diseases. Smoking also slows down your gums’ natural healing process once they are damaged.

Visit your dentist regularly.

Regular visits to the dentist can help detect possible early symptoms of gum disease. If detected, the dentist can administer treatment immediately. If you have any tartar formation found around the gum area, the dentist will quickly and efficiently remove it. With regular brushing, flossing and dental cleaning, you could avoid gum problems permanently.
