We aim to see patients on the same day so that you can find relief from your pain and get back to your life. Dental emergencies cannot be predicted or planned, so we’re here to support you whenever you need it the most. Same day appointments are often available, so you can avoid further disruption to your life. If you have to wait until the next day, we can provide advice over the phone to help you to manage the symptoms in the meantime.
If you have an emergency outside of office hours, call our practice to find more information on what to do next. You’ll be directed to other services you can access if you cannot wait. If you have severe swelling, uncontrolled bleeding or are struggling to breathe, this is a medical emergency and you should call 999.
What counts as a dental emergency?
The most common dental emergency you are likely to face would be a sudden toothache, usually from tooth decay or as the result of an impacted wisdom tooth. If the pain is keeping you awake at night or preventing you from going to work or school, then you need to address this quickly. Dental pain is often caused by decay of the tooth that has reached the sensitive pulp. When this happens, you might experience a hot and throbbing pain that feels worse when you bite down.
Other dental emergencies could include injury to the face that knocks out a tooth or leaves it loose. You might also experience complications following dental procedures such as excess swelling, sudden pain or uncontrolled bleeding. Finally, you should also treat problems such as losing a filling, crown, bridge or veneer as an emergency, as this could leave the underlying tooth structure vulnerable.
What happens during an emergency dentist appointment?
The purpose of an emergency dental appointment is to quickly diagnose the problem and find relief. In many cases, the cause is obvious and visible, but we might need to take X-rays to get a closer look at the structures that we cannot see. If you have lost a crown, bridge or veneer and have saved the dental prosthetic, we can often quickly re-attach this so there will be no further damage. If the procedure is quick, we can often complete this in the same day.
For more complex procedures, we will address the cause of your pain or discomfort and then arrange a routine appointment to complete the treatment. The overall aim of the emergency appointment is to address your pain and ensure that there is no further damage. We can then create a treatment plan that will get your oral health back on track.
