Introduction to Composite Bonding

Composite resin is more widely known as the material used for white fillings, but we can now put it to work for cosmetic restorations. This treatment delivers similar results to veneers or crowns, but it is more cost-effective, less invasive and takes less time. We start by colour-matching the resin to your teeth and then lightly etch the surface of the tooth. This helps to make it more grippy. Next, we apply the soft resin directly to your teeth and shape it as required. It’s highly effective for tackling issues such as small gaps, chips, cracks, uneven edges, discolouration, misaligned teeth and asymmetries. Once we have achieved the desired shape, we cure the material with UV light before polishing it to perfection. The whole process is completed in one visit, making it one of the fastest restorations available.

Benefits of Composite Bonding

Patients love this treatment for a number of reasons. Perhaps the most obvious is that it is quick to achieve results and there is no downtime following treatment, so you could have this treatment in your lunch break and go straight back to work. Another benefit is that it is minimally invasive. We don’t remove enamel, we simply etch the tooth surface to make sure the material sticks sufficiently. The resin is also resistant to staining, so you can enjoy a whiter smile for longer. Composite bonding lasts for around 5 years before it starts to wear away. After this time, you can choose to replace it, or opt for a long-term treatment like veneers.

Differences Between Composite Bonding And Composite Veneers

When learning about this treatment, you might come across a treatment plan called composite veneers. This is when we use composite resin to replicate the results of veneer treatment. Composite bonding will typically refer to treatment on a single tooth, whereas composite veneer treatment is used to address all of the teeth visible when you smile. It offers a highly cost effective alternative to veneer treatment that will allow you to enhance your smile for less. If you’re not sure which treatment plan is right for you, book an appointment with our cosmetic team to explore your options.
