How to Maintain Happy Gums
When we talk about great dental health, we often focus on teeth. As you know, it’s really important to keep your teeth healthy. However, teeth aren’t the whole story when it comes to great dental health.
Your gums play a very important role in your overall dental health. They keep your teeth firmly in place and help to protect the bones underneath from bacteria. It’s really important to keep your gums in great condition.
If you’d like to know more about maintaining happy, healthy gums, you’ll find our advice below.
Brush your teeth at least twice a day
One of the reasons why it’s important to brush your teeth thoroughly twice a day is to keep gums healthy. Make sure you brush last thing at night and one other time of day. For best results, use a toothpaste that contains the recommended level of fluoride. This is between 1350-1500pm for adults, more than 1000pm for children aged 3-6 and at least 1000pm for children under three.
Floss or use interdental brushes daily
Flossing and interdental brushes are important as they help to remove pieces of food and bacteria from between the teeth. They also help to keep the gum line clean.
Look out for the early signs of gum disease
Gum disease occurs in three stages. The first stage is called gingivitis and is very common. Signs of gingivitis include gums that bleed easily (such as during brushing) or that are red, swollen or tender. If you notice any of these symptoms, we recommend you ask your dentist for advice about treating it.
Visit your dentist regularly
Regular visits to your dentist will help you make sure you are successfully keeping on top of your gum health.
