Gum care

The best way to treat gum disease is to practice good oral hygiene, although additional dental and medical treatments are sometimes necessary. At Damira, we can help with that.

Gum disease is caused by the germs (bacteria) which live in your mouth. The bacteria stick to your teeth forming plaque, irritate the gums and make them bleed.

If plaque is not cleaned off it solidifies to form tartar. Tartar then releases poisons into your gums and bones, causing the bone to dissolve over time. This is why it is important to see a hygienist who can prevent this from happening.

This may have specific causes such as diabetes or smoking, but some people are just more prone to gum disease.

Good oral hygiene involves:

  • Brushing your teeth for about 2 minutes last thing at night before you go to bed and on 1 other occasion every day
  • Using toothpaste that contains the right amount of fluoride, a natural mineral that helps protect against tooth decay
  • Flossing your teeth or using interdental brushes regularly
  • Not smoking
  • Regularly visiting your dentist and hygienist – at least twice a year
